Study Proves ABC Music & Me Program Boosts Literacy Development
GREENSBORO, NC – October 15, 2013 – SEG Measurement, an independent research firm, conducted a national study of nearly 300 preschool children, aged three years through five years, to test the ability of Kindermusik International’s curriculum ABC Music & Me to affect students’ literacy development.
During the study, students in both the treatment and control groups were tested with the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) Pre-K Assessment at both the beginning and end of the school year. Results indicated that students in the treatment group showed a 32% higher gain in PALS scores over the control group, indicating greater gains in student’s literacy as a result of the curriculum.
“Students using Kindermusik showed significantly greater improvement in literacy and language skills than students who did not use Kindermusik,” said Scott Elliot, president of SEG Measurement.
ABC Music & Me is an early childhood literacy and language curriculum from Kindermusik International that uses music and movement to engage young children, while teaching a variety of skills critical to later school success. With ABC Music & Me, age-appropriate activities are designed to develop and strengthen each student’s early literacy skills, fine/gross motor skills, and social-emotional skills through theme-related songs, poems, stories, dancing, and instrument play. A vital and effective learning component of the program is monthly home learning materials intentionally designed to encourage parental involvement.
“The results of this study, which used the highly respected PALS test, reaffirms that ABC Music & Me meets the direct needs of students and teachers for fostering language and literacy skills,” said Scott Elliot. “Survey results indicated that preschool teachers found the ABC Music & Me curriculum, delivered in 30-minute weekly lessons, easy to teach with no prior music background and to promote social & emotional development in addition to literacy gains.”
Parents received home learning materials for use with their child including a monthly literature & activity magazine, a monthly music CD, and an instrument every other month. Nine out of 10 parents said they would be “highly likely” or “very likely” to recommend the program to other parents.
“The most effective aspects of ABC Music & Me are that the children all participate and have fun doing the different activities each week. The lesson plan is easy to follow. The assessment forms from fall to spring show growth in many areas…Overall I feel that ABC Music & Me has now become a daily part of my lesson plan and I am looking forward to using the program next year,” said a preschool teacher who participated in the study.
